The founding of FMIPA UI has become a part of great history of Universitas Indonesia (UI). Initially, it was known as Fakultas Ilmu Pasti dan Ilmu Alam (FIPIA) (Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences) located in Bandung. Considering the growing Universitas Indonesia which based in the nation’s capital, in 1959 FIPIA UI in Bandung was delegated to be managed by the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB).
Afterwards, UI starts to plan the establishment of FIPIA located in Jakarta according to the plans of Department of Education, Teachings and Culture at the time based on the recommendation of experts from UI. This plan was then followed up by a meeting of number of experts on May 18, 1960 directed by chairman of the UI presidium, Prof. Dr. Soedjono D. Poesponegoro attended by among others: Prof. dr. R. Slamet Iman Santoso, Prof. dr. Soetarman, Prof. dr. B. Sjahriar Rasad, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tojib Hadiwidjaja, Prof. dr. G.A. Siwabessy, Ir. Kuntoadji, Ir. Jasif Iljas, Dipl. Ing. Sudjito Danusaputro, dan Drs. Lauw Soan Keng. Setting the deadline on September 1960, this meeting formed a board for FIPIA establishment chaired by Drs. Lauw Soan Keng with Prof. dr. G.A.
