FMIPA UI Geography Researchers who are members of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Experts and Research team developed a WebGIS (Web Geographic Information System) Portal, which is an online / network map.

The development of this portal aims to assist the government in mapping the distribution of the COVID-19 virus. These distribution maps can be accessed through the page

WebGIS will be able to map the population infected with COVID-19, the distribution of the locations of patients who are positive for COVID-19 infection, as well as assist the government in mapping areas prone to new infections. The WebGIS portal can be accessed easily via the computer or smartphone.

Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Prof. Dr. rer nat. Abdul Haris said, “The spread of COVID-19 has become a worldwide concern, for that reason, we are trying to mobilize the UI Experts and Research team to jointly develop a map of the spread of COVID-19 accurately”.

This spatial analysis portal was originally developed by Ardiansyah, the UI researcher from the Department of Geography, FMIPA, then complemented together by a team of researchers from the Computer Science Faculty (Fasilkom), the Faculty of Medicine (FK), the Faculty of Public Health (FKM), and The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) is under the coordination of the UI Directorate of Innovation and Science Techno Park. ”

The information contained in this portal concerns the distribution of the location of patients who are positively infected by the COVID-19 virus; People under surveillance (ODP), and Patients under surveillance (PDP).

This map portal is also able to describe three classes based on their vulnerability status: Low, Medium and High Prone. High-Prone Classified areas (marked by the red zone) are characterized by three things namely, the number of sufferers residing in the region; the large number and proximity of patients with public transportation facilities, and; high population density.

There are several parameters taken into account in the WebGIS Map includes the density of patients in a certain area; population density of each region, and; density of transportation systems (train stations, bus stops, terminals, and others).

Data for this online map portal is compiled from various Regional Government sources and Institutions such as the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), DKI Jakarta Regional Government, West Java Regional Government, and others. This portal is enhanced by the input of researchers from the Epidemiology Department of FKM, FKUI, Fasilkom, and state-owned partners such as Telkom Indonesia.

“In intensive discussions between UI and PT Telkom Indonesia, the Big Data Division, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Research from Telkom have also expressed an interest in working together and using this spatial analysis component to complement the portals and information systems they have built separately. Going forward, it is expected that big data owned by Telkom as the largest cellular service provider in Indonesia can support data input for this portal and other portals that can help control the spread of the Corona Virus,” said Vice-Rector Haris.

It is hoped that this WebGIS Portal can be useful for policy makers both in the Regional Government, Ministry of Health, BNPB and other Ministries. This portal can also be an input for the community to increase vigilance and self-anticipation in areas vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus.
