FMIPA UI Again Holds Socialization and Disaster Mitigation

Wednesday, August 31, 2018 at SMAN 31 Jakarta, the community service team of geology and geophysics study program Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Universitas Indonesia conducted a socialization and mitigation of floods, fires and potential earthquakes> 8 SR.

This socialization was attended by students from several schools in the Matraman sub-district, East Jakarta, namely SMK 5 Jakarta, SMAN 22 Jakarta, Jakarta PSKD II High School, Jakarta Fons Vitae 1 High School, Cipta Karya Vocational School, Pancasila Vocational School and Jakarta 31 High School. The schools are representatives of the six villages in Matraman Subdistrict.

This socialization invited Rasmid, M.Si (Research Center for BMKG) Tri Indrawan, A.Md. AK. SH. M.Si (Field of Prevention and Preparedness of DKI Jakarta BPBD), and Iskandarsyah, M.Si (Geophysics Lecturer at FMIPA UI) as speaker.

Rasmid, in his presentation, took the example of the Lombok earthquake disaster. He explained that many buildings in the area that did not have a support pillar beneath the surface were added to the type of soil that did not absorb earthquake waves, so the earthquake in Lombok in August 2018 was felt strongly and damaged many buildings.

“Earthquake natural disaster can be predicted its potential, but it cannot be known the day, time and seconds when the earthquake occurred. So it is very important that disaster education will increase public awareness. “, Explained Rasmid.

In addition Tri Indrawan as Head of DKI Jakarta BPBD Prevention and Preparedness explained that BPPD is an institution that plays an important role when a disaster occurs in an area, because BPBD is fully responsible for disaster management in the region with the support of related institutions and agencies.

“Tim Sar will help survivors first, therefore every individual must have the skills to conduct an independent evacuation when a disaster occurs,” said Tri Indrawan added.

Iskandarsyah as a lecturer in Geophysics FMIPA UI who is a member of the UI community service team said that, it is important to have an evacuation route in Matraman District.

“According to the study, areas that have evacuation routes will evacuate faster than areas that do not have an evacuation route, so our team is developing and developing a disaster evacuation route and is expected to help the community later.” Iskandar said.

Upon completion of this disaster socialization and mitigation, it is hoped that new cadres from among the students will be born to spread disaster knowledge to their relatives, families and surrounding communities to be more caring and ready if a disaster occurs in accordance with the tag line of this program, namely “Young, Spicy , Resilient Disaster “.

Flood and fire disasters may be predictable and avoided, but earthquake disasters until now cannot be predicted when it will come. So, never underestimate a little knowledge about disaster, because we live on earth which is full of mysteries.
