FMIPA UI Chemists Remind Dangers of Excessive Use of Hand Sanitizers and Disinfectants for Health

The increasing outbreaks of the corona virus (Covid-19) in Indonesia will certainly make the majority of the public take extraordinary anticipation to protect themselves to avoid exposure to the virus.

Starting from wearing masks, hand sanitizers, to spraying disinfectants to prevent the spread and transmission very quickly by this global pandemic outbreak.

The use of hand sanitizers has suddenly become increasingly popular for maintaining hand hygiene. This is considered by the community to be a practical way because it can be carried and done anytime and anywhere.

But the use of hand sanitizers can not be careless. Lecturer in Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia as well as Member of the Indonesian Young Scientists (ALMI) Dr. Yuni K. Krisnandi reminded that the use of hand sanitizers can be used if there is no soap and water. The use of hand sanitizers should not be excessive.

“In order not to cause skin irritation,” said Yuni reported from the BEKASISOCIETY.com page, Monday (06/04/2020).

The content of flammable chemicals on the hand sanitizer becomes a matter of concern when used, so she warns when using do not get close to fire. Besides using it too much, it will cause problems on sensitive skin, such as skin irritation.

“Because (containing) alcohol with a fairly high level, of course after use it will quickly evaporate and if you have sensitive skin be careful because alcohol can cause dry skin. So it is easy to irritate, “added Yuni.

In addition to hand sanitizers, according to Yuni, the use of disinfectant liquids should not be sprayed careless.

As we know in the midst of this Covid-19 pandemic, that spraying disinfectant liquid is being encourage throughout the region, both carried out by official Government agencies, so that people are also competing to make their own disinfectant liquid.

Spraying was carried out in places that have a high intensity of direct contact and interaction with many people such as public facilities, offices, to residential areas.

However, according to her, not much is known that this disinfectant liquid contains chemicals that have a bad effect when in direct contact with humans.

Generally irritated skin, eyes and respiratory problems, to trigger cancer (carcinogenic).

“The use of disinfectants that are directly sprayed is not recommended for the general public, especially if they are not told what their contents are in the Sprayed water. “Instead of effectively killing the corona virus, it will make other residents experience other health problems, (because there have been no studies that mass spraying is effective),” she said.

“The most appropriate way to clean ourself is hand washing and bathing using soap, by rubbing, so that microbes will escape from the body,” Yuni added.
