FMIPA UI Geoscience Team Wins 2nd Place in PIKOM-G 2019

The UI Student Team represented by Ghozy El Fatih (Geophysics, 2017) & Rahmat Supriyanto (Geology, 2017) won 2nd place in the Scientific Week and Geography Competition (PIKOM-G) 2019, on Saturday (11/23) at the Universitas Negeri Padang.

With the theme “Innovation and Youth Strategy in Dealing with Strategic Issues in the Industrial Revolution Era 4.0”, PIKOM-G 2019 featured 2 branches of competition, namely Essays and Scientific Writing Contest.

Ghozy and Rahmat chose the essay contest branch with science and technology sub-themes, by combining background issues related to disaster mitigation knowledge and EWAS utilization, which is earthquake early detection technology which is the result of lecturers’ innovations as well as the head of the FMIPA UI geoscience study program.

Ghozy explained, Indonesia is a country that has a high potential for disaster-prone, so he considers that efforts to raise public awareness in increasing the ability to face the threat of disaster are very important.

According to him, awareness and mastery of disaster mitigation among the community are still low.

Through disaster mitigation, said Ghozy, at least disaster risks can be reduced, including physical and material losses.

“At least there is an adjustment of natural and human systems to natural disasters that occur, to reduce the negative impacts, for example, the number of victims or physical losses, can also material losses”. said Ghozy.

Rahmat explained that understanding the importance of disaster mitigation must be in line with understanding Indonesia’s geological conditions and further understanding of the characteristics of various types of disasters and how to handle them.

He also revealed, his team received full support from FMIPA UI through the Geoscience study program. The support is in the form of funding, mentoring and borrowing EWAS tools like a visual aid.

Although not yet won the first place, the two students with geology background claimed to be proud and motivated to continue to actively participate in various competitions in accordance with their knowledge to develop their potential.

“As students, we should be channeling aspirations and providing solutions to problems that occur. In accordance with the field of science that we are learning, “Rahmat said as the closing interview with the contributor of the Faculty of Public Relations UI.
