Seminar Fisika: Complexity and Emergent Property: The Ultimate Secret of Nature? (Dr Husin Alatas – Fisika IPB)

Acara seminar rutin yang dilaksanakan oleh Departemen Fisika-UI pada pekan Rabu 22 April 2015 mengangkat topik yang berjudul “Complexity and Emergent Property: The Ultimate Secret of Nature?”, dengan pembicara Dr. Husin Alatas (Fisika-IPB) – Research Cluster for Dynamics & Modeling of Complex Systems, Faculty of Mathematics and Seminar_Fisika_DrHusinAlatas_BNatural Sciences (RCDMCS), and Theoretical Physics Division, Department of Physics, Bogor Agricultural University.

Recently, the new paradigm of complexity has attracted many attentions due to its important for explaining phenomena in complex systems on every scale that cannot be described only by studying their sub-systems separately. The simultaneous nonlinear interactions among the sub-systems have been known to be responsible  Seminar_Fisika_DrHusinAlatas_Afor the existence of an entirely new characteristic that do not exhibited by the corresponding sub-systems which is nowadays called as emergent property. This property can be considered as one of the most important feature of nature. It is now realized that reductionism, in which physicists usually use to study the characteristics of a system, has failed to explain many unexpected behaviors in complex physical, biological, environmental as well as social systems.
In this talk, phenomena that induce emergent properties of complex systems, such as self-organization, self-similarity, self-assembly, pattern-formation etc, are briefly discussed. These phenomena occur in many systems with different scale level. Some results of our recent investigations on several complex systems are also presented.
