Judging from its history, the establishment of the Geography Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UI in the 1950s was initiated by the Indonesian Army, particularly General Gatot Subroto, who was motivated by the aspiration to provide experts in the manufacture and analysis of maps for military purposes. Therefore, it is not surprising that since it was introduced on November 27, 1959, all lecture activities were held at the Indonesian Army’s Topographical Agency (Jantop) Geography Building located on Jl. Dr. Wahidin No. 11, Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta before transferred to the UI Salemba Campus in 1976.
At that time, the study program available was only for undergraduate program. The number of students who applied in the first batch was more than 100 people. During that period, The Department of Geography was under the management of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, Padjadjaran University (FIPIA-Unpad) in Bandung. It was only in 1966 that the management of the Geography Department was transferred to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA – UI) based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture No. 79 dated October 8, 1966.
As the establishment of UI Campus, Depok, West Java was completed in 1987, lectures and educational administration activities of the Department of Geography were moved from Salemba to Depok. In 1998, the Department of Geography opened a Master Program in Geography. We have a vision to be “Center of Excellence in the field of Geography nationally recognized and able to play an active role at the global level” and our missions are (i) to organize competency-based and research-based higher education activities in geography, (ii) to organize research activities for the development of applied science and research, (iii) to organize service activities to improve the standard and quality of life as well as humanity of the Indonesian society (iv) organizing the best service activities in the education field, research and community service.
The Undergraduate and Master Programs in Geography have received an A accreditation from the National Accreditation Board – Higher Education (BAN-PT).
